NASA may have given up on the Spirit (http://xkcd.com/695/) but I think I could drive it out with careful manipulation of all the controls provided on my sophisticated simulator. It's all a matter of getting things calibrated, maybe I should call Uncle Steve... nah, he'll just bring bunch of Italians with him to drink coffee and watch me do the work. Now mother quit distracting me!!
Thanks to J9, Michael, & Madeline for this wondrous contraption.

Your English-majoring, botanically oriented g-mom says dash away from the geek zone! Tell daddy blech! Never utter the word calibrate around me again! Run for the garden (when it can be found again, of course) and toddle happily amongst the foxgloves and periwinkle. Before long we'll make sure you've got your own dissecting microscope to explore the fascinating (honest!) world of insect morphology and fern reproduction. I can't wait to show you your first butterfly scales.

Hey - what about us corporate fools - or current SAHM? Uncle Nate and I read the blog faithfully...oh, and what about Landyn? He loves hearing about your adventures!

Obviously, your father is casting aspersions at those of us who are students of the written word, we who truly appreciate the great works of literature from Beowulf to Hemingway and Joyce.Alas, my dear grandchild, we are surrounded by geeks and MBAs--however, all is not lost--Aunt Beth has a great affinity for the Russian novelists and Aunt Carol is a Shakespearian scholar so we will deliver you from the dark side of numbers, formulas, and related soulless studies. Fluids, neutrinos and the bottom line do not set the spirit soaring or nourish one's very being. We will prevail!!!

I hope you are still staying up late and being a party girl like I taught you over the holidays! I've heard that the howler monkey remains intact, and I couldn't be happier - keep up the good work, kiddo! I will ignore the headshrinker comment because I am sure your dad's filling your head with that nonsense.

You're in good company; I read it every MWF, and many of them are posted around the lab. If your parents get too bossy with you, try using this trick on them -- http://xkcd.com/149/

Sorry for the cheap shot Uncle Steve. If it makes you feel any better you're probably the only person around here that knows about xkcd. The rest of my readers are all MSWs, Headshrinkers, Botanists or [shudder] English Majors.
